What households say

SR

Suhaila Ramli

We called Domestica after my father passed and none of us knew where any of his papers were. The coordinator came twice — once to sort the study, once to go through the filing cabinet in the bedroom. By the end we had a full list of everything, and a separate note for the lawyer with the questions we couldn't answer ourselves. It was a difficult period and having someone practical to help with that part made a difference.

I was sceptical about paying someone to help sort papers — it seemed like something I could do myself. The honest answer is that I'd been saying that for three years and not doing it. The Guided Home Programme covered five rooms across ten weeks, and we now have a proper folder system and a digital index I can search. My wife found a missing insurance policy within two minutes last month, which had been missing for years.

We used the One-Room Walkthrough for the storeroom, which had become a general dumping ground for anything important we couldn't file immediately. Two hours, and it was done — sorted, labelled, inventoried. The folder plan they left was clear enough that I've since applied it to two other rooms on my own. Straightforward, no fuss, exactly as described.

Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan

My mother's house in Port Dickson has been in the family since the 1970s. By the time we decided to sort out the paperwork, there were documents going back forty years in three different rooms, some in Bahasa Malaysia, some in English, some in Mandarin. The Full Plan Archive took four months and eighteen sessions. It was a significant undertaking. What we have now is a complete indexed archive, a document map, and a proper orientation note. We also have a register for the solicitor, which made the estate matters much simpler to handle.

I was concerned that having someone in the house going through papers would feel intrusive. In practice, the coordinator was quiet and focused, and nothing was touched without my agreement. I was present the whole time. The pace was comfortable — I didn't feel rushed, and when I wanted to stop and look at something more closely, that was fine. The weekly email access was useful too; I had three questions come up between sessions and they were answered within a day each time.

The thing I didn't expect was how useful the orientation document would be. I thought it was just a formality — a kind of summary. But my husband hadn't been involved in any of the sessions and when I gave him the orientation note he said it was the first time he actually knew where to find anything in the house. It's written simply enough that anyone could follow it. That's probably the most useful single thing that came out of the programme.

Three household engagements in detail

CASE-01 // ONE-ROOM WALKTHROUGH

A working couple's storeroom in Seremban

CHALLENGE

A storeroom had become the household's default filing location — anything important that didn't have a clear home ended up there. After three years, the couple could no longer locate their car insurance documents, their tenancy agreement for a rented property, or the birth certificates for their children.

APPROACH

One session of two hours. The coordinator sorted the storeroom's papers into seven broad categories, created a labelled folder set, and produced a written inventory. The couple were present throughout; three bags of duplicates and outdated correspondence were agreed for shredding.

OUTCOME

All four missing documents located and filed. Folder plan handed over for use in other rooms. Gap list identified two documents that likely needed to be requested as duplicates from the relevant institutions — these were noted in writing and the couple followed up independently.

"It was less than an afternoon and we found everything we'd been looking for. The folder plan is now on the inside of the storeroom door." — Azri & Farah, Seremban
CASE-02 // GUIDED HOME PROGRAMME

A three-bedroom house in Nilai, preparing for a property purchase

CHALLENGE

The household was preparing to purchase a property and needed to locate financial records, employment documents and identity papers quickly and reliably for the bank's requirements. Records were spread across four rooms, a laptop, and a portable hard drive.

APPROACH

Five sessions across ten weeks. Each session addressed one area — bedroom, study, kitchen drawer set, and digital files on two devices. A growing digital index was updated after each session. The open-questions register flagged four documents that might require official copies.

OUTCOME

At the end of the programme, the household had a complete digital index, a household document map, and a concise register for the bank and their solicitor. The property purchase proceeded without the document delays that had affected an earlier attempt with a different property two years before.

"We should have done this two years ago. The bank meeting was the simplest part of the whole purchase." — Karthikeyan & Malathi, Nilai
CASE-03 // FULL PLAN ARCHIVE PROGRAMME

A family home in Tampin occupied for over thirty years

CHALLENGE

The family home had been occupied by three generations and contained documents in English, Bahasa Malaysia and traditional Chinese characters. No inventory existed. The family had four adult children living in different locations; none of them knew the full picture of what was held in the property.

APPROACH

Sixteen weeks, seventeen sessions covering seven rooms and two storage areas. Active records separated from archive. A full digital scan of all records, named to a consistent convention and transferred to a family-owned external hard drive. Physical folders rebuilt to match. Orientation document written in full. Three walkthrough sessions with three of the four adult children.

OUTCOME

A complete indexed archive of the home's records — the first time in thirty years that a full picture existed. The open-questions register contained eleven items for a solicitor and one for a land office, all written with sufficient context to make those appointments productive. Annual review calendar set for January each year.

"Three of us were in the house for different walkthrough sessions and we all now have a clear idea of where things are. That hasn't been true in this house since I was a child." — Yap Wei Lin, Tampin
